NEW YORK, July 12 (Hina) - A projects for regional disaster
prevention centre, which is to be based in Croatia, was presented
during the annual session of the UN Economic and Social Council
(ECOSOC) in New York on Wednesday.
On that occasion, an advisor in the Croatian mission to the world
organisation, Ivan Nimac, stressed that the regional centre would
not only have the task to react in cases of natural disaster and
other accidents but it would also assume a greater significance for
the regional security within measures for confidence-building.
The centre will connect co-ordinating activities in humanitarian
assistance and in the peace and stability promotion, Nimac
explained.
The proposal for the set-up of such Centre was launched within the
Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe.
Preparations are being conducted by Croatia's Interior Ministry,
the UN Office for humanitarian issues, the European Commission, CEI
(Central European Initiative), NATO, Red Cross and Red Crescent
officials and governments of Bulgaria, Germany and Italy.
Nimac said many reasons justified the proposal that the centre be
founded in Croatia. For instance, as early as 1936 Zagreb had the
organised service of civil defence.
The Croatian Government has ensured five million German marks for
equipping of the centre and is ready to financially assist its work,
Nimac said.
One of possible participants in the centre's work - Swedish company
"Ericsson" - presented its plans on that occasion in New York.
