SIMONOVIC ADDRESSES ECOSOC SESSION

NEW YORK, July 10 (Hina) - Implementation of the conclusions of special U.N. conferences and their monitoring were discussed in the continuation of this year's session of the U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York on Monday. Croatia's permanent representative at the U.N., Ivan Simonovic, also addressed the session. Like other participants in the discussion, Simonovic said it was necessary to assess every five years the implementation of important conclusions and views of the U.N., such as those regarding the position of women in society or social development. He also observed that large international conferences were often expensive and long. "National reports on implementing conclusions of conferences are also important as an incentive for their implementation... and for the exchange of experience on the national and international level," Simonovic said. He supported the participation of representatives of non- governmental organisations in important international meetings organised by the U.N., as well as in the process of monitoring the implementation of their conclusions. Simonovic believes that occasional thematic meetings of the U.N. Security Council would be useful and supports a better cooperation between ECOSOC commissions. (hina) rml
