According to a decision supported by 14 out of 15 present councillors in the 25-seat council during a heated hours-long debate, the monument in memory of Tudjman will be called the Monument to Independence, and the other two will be in tribute to Pope John Paul II -- Monument to Peace -- and to Split residents who contributed to Croatia's independence -- Monument to Freedom.
The proposals about the monuments were moved by the city's commission for naming streets and squares and at the incentive of Split Mayor Zeljko Kerum.
A total of 22 councillors arrived at the beginning of today's session, and before the vote on the matter, six representatives of the Social Democratic Party/Croatian People's Party (SDP-HNS) walked out in protest over the refusal of their motion to scrap the vote on the Tudjman monument from the agenda.
