WASHINGTON, June 27 (Hina) - The United States Senate unanimously
adopted a resolution expressing support to Croatia's government in
effecting democratic changes in the country.
The resolution, issued on Monday, says the Congress strongly
supports Croatia's choosing western democratic standards and will
extend full support to Croatia's new government to entirely
implement democratic changes.
Special support is given programmes on refugee returns,
privatisation, changes in the media, and continued cooperation
with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
in The Hague, as an example for other countries in the region.
The U.S. Senate also concluded it was necessary to promote
economic, political and military relations with Croatia, as a U.S.
partner in south and central Europe.
The resolution was adopted a little over a month after the House of
Representatives reached another, almost identical in content.
These Congress decisions, when both houses act in harmony, express
a uniform political viewpoint of the highest U.S. body of
representatives. Even though they have no legal power, they are an
important framework for the political activity of the White House
and the State Department.
