ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - The chairman of the Council of Europe's
Parliamentary Assembly, Lord Russell Johnston, on Tuesday
addressed Croatian deputies at the beginning of today's session of
the House of Representatives.
Parliament Speaker Zlatko Tomcic expressed satisfaction with Lord
Johnston's visit, adding the guest was a true friend of Croatia.
Tomcic recalled that Croatia became a full member of the Council of
Europe in March 1996, when it took over 21 obligations with the aim
of implementing democratic reforms. In a very short period of time,
the new authority has fulfilled many promises given to the Council
of Europe and is working on the remaining issues, Tomcic said.
Lord Johnston expressed support for the new Croatian President and
Government, adding he was impressed with their determination to see
that Croatia achieved the position it deserved in the community of
democratic and advanced European nations.
Croatia has achieved much in only several months. It has launched
important democratic reforms, improved cooperation with the
international community, and started to actively contribute to
stability in the region, which has improved its international
reputation and strengthened its international position almost
overnight, Lord Johnston said.
Thanks to this, Croatia today is catching up with other countries of
central and east Europe which have already started negotiations on
full membership in the European Union, Lord Johnston said, adding
he did not doubt Croatia too would in the foreseeable future become
an EU member.
