New mass grave excavations to be conducted in Bugojno this month

SARAJEVO, July 8 (Hina) - The Institute for Missing Persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina will start new exhumations in the area of Bugojno, central Bosnia, by the end of July in the search for bodies of Croats who have been unaccounted-for since the conflict between local Bosnian Muslims and Croats in 1993.

The institute's official, Marko Jurisic, said on Friday that excavations would be conducted in a bid to find bodies of Croats who went missing after they were captured by local units of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jurisic was quoted by the Banja Luka-based Nezavisne Novine daily as saying that there were reports about possible three or four locations containing bodies of some of the captured Bosnian Croat (HVO) soldiers.

The institute has been given that information from the Office of the Chief Bosnian Prosecutor that is conducting an investigation into crimes in Bugojno, Jurisic said.

The reports on the matter were made following a confession by Enes Handzic, a former Bosnian Army intelligence officer, sentenced to eight years in prison for Bugojno atrocities.

His confession helped forensic investigators to find the remains of at least three people near that central Bosnian town. The remains are assumed to be of HVO soldiers Nikica Milos, Perica Kovacevic and Jadranko Gvozden.

According to Jurisic, indictments are to be issued against the wartime Bugojno civilian and military authorities.

Hnadzic said that the most responsible persons for the developments in Bugojo were the wartime mayor Dzevad Mlaco and the commander of the Bosnian Army's 307th brigade, Tahir Granic as well as the current Bosnian defence minister Selko Cikotic who was the commander of the army's operative area in central Bosnia in 1993 and 1994.

The spokesman for the Bosnian prosecutorial authorities, Boris Grubesic, declined to comment on possible indictments.
