"The ten years of Croatia's independence make us proud and happy.
The path we have covered was difficult and often painful. With deep
gratitude and pride we remember all those who gave their lives so
that we could move on today. We must never forget that.
"Croatia is a full member of Partnership for Peace, its presence in
international relations is increasing and we expect the process of
our admission to the European Union and NATO to be accelerated.
Ahead of us is great work, efforts and struggle. Croatia must be
pulled out of the economic depression and that is the main task now.
I expect the Croatian Government to draw up a new strategy of
development for overcoming the economic crisis and I call on all
Croatian citizens to support the Government in the implementation
of that programme. Only with a successful development strategy can
Croatia become a country in which the competent, rather than the
politically suitable will rule and work, in which pensioners will
live in a dignified manner and the youth will have a future. There is
no other way. That is the only path we can take now," Mesic said in
the message.
