WASHINGTON, D.C., May 26 (Hina) - A delegation of the Croatian
Defence Ministry, headed by deputy Minister Zlatko Gareljic, on
Thursday in Washington, D.C. held talks with United States senior
military officials, headed by Secretary of Defence assistant for
international security issues Frank Kramer.
The significant issue of the talks was the fact that Croatia was
officially a full member of NATO's Partnership for Peace programme
as of Thursday. This means Croatia is qualified for financing
military programmes - the previously agreed purchase of the
military-civilian radar system and simulation computer system for
command communications.
Galjeric refused to discuss the amount in details, because the
final decision must be passed by the United States congress.
During the talks in the Pentagon, it was agreed that the United
States experts participate in the draft of the defence evaluation
in order to objectively assess the current situation and Croatia's
military needs. Apart from the fact that such an evaluation is a
ticket to NATO, it is also to help the draft of crucial strategic
documents on national security and military doctrine which Croatia
does not have.
The talks also tackled expanding education and training of Croatian
officers in the United States. Currently, there are 24 Croatian
cadets in the United States military academies, and about 40
officers are interns.
