ZAGREB, May 23 (Hina) - The Alliance of Croatian Independent Unions
(SSSH) supports a Government motion on a packet of measures, SSSH
president Davor Juric told a news conference Tuesday.
"We assess the packet of government measures as stimulating for
ceasing unemployment and a beginning of a new wave of employment,"
Juric said.
He said the measures also stimulated the growth of production, and
because of the new way of calculating salary contributions and the
Value Added Tax, there is a possibility of mending the solvency of
numerous companies.
The Government measures will, because of the decrease in labour
prices, would have particularly good influence on labour intensive
activities, such as the textile industry, Juric said.
He said the SSSH expects that the combination of Government
measures and the begun repayment of state debts to the economy would
lead to a regular payment of salaries, pensions and social
contributions, and gradually, to an increase in living standards.
Commenting on the Government's motion for an increase in excise tax
on oil products, Juric said it was important to note that this does
not relate to fuels for agriculture and fishing.
SSSH economic advisor Marina Kokanovic said that the measures,
should they be adopted in Parliament, "should not significantly
influence the price of the union basket". The basket, according to
SSSH criteria, contains 129 products of the basic living
necessities, not including cigarettes, alcohol and beer. According
to her, the implementation of Government measures could change the
price of products of the union basket by 0.3 to 0.5 per cent.
"I am very satisfied with this packet of measures because they are
on the path of what the SSSH has been suggesting for the last five
years," Kokanovic said.
Juric added that, if prices do rise without justification, the SSSH
would fight through every law-based means to increase salaries.
