Vukovarans, expelled from their homes in that eastern Croatian town
when the then Serb-led Yugoslav army overran it in autumn 1991, on
Thursday staged a peaceful rally before the Sabor's building in
Zagreb protesting against the Government's recent decision to
order the displaced persons' movement from hotels where they have
been staying "temporarily" for years.
Protesters held talks with the Sabor's commission, which was set up
this morning to solve this issue. The commission consists of one
member of each parliamentary party.
We agreed that each case be solved individually, said Mate Granic,
the Democratic Centre's (DC) representative in the commission,
after the talks.
It was also agreed that none should be expelled from the hotel until
the person in question or family can return to their reconstructed
home or alternative accommodation is provided for them. In case
that a hotel should be closed, Vukovarans should receive lodgings
at the same level, Granic added.
An appeal, displaced Vukovar citizens who are living in hotels
forwarded to MPs today read that they did not accept that they may be
transferred to disused refugee centres.
