ZAGREB, May 17 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan on Thursday evening strongly condemned an incident which occurred today in Veljun near Karlovac and in which a monument, erected in memory of WWII victims of fascism, was
damaged. Racan also demanded an urgent and efficient investigation into the incident. As the Prime Minister and on behalf of the six parties of the ruling coalition, I strongly condemn this barbaric act and demand an urgent and efficient criminal investigation and, if the act has really been committed by Croatian Army members, I demand that a disciplinary procedure be taken against their superiors. Racan reiterated that the democratic Croatia condemned any form of violence and terrorism and would not tolerate it. The monument to the victims of fascism in Veljun has been attacked

done by a group of Croatian Army members, he added.
The monument in Veljun was damaged at 1pm today. According to a
police report, "the base (of the monument) with the inscription and
the plaque were torn down." Police have arrested five members of the
Zadar military police.
