VUKOVAR, May 3 (Hina) - For a correct position of the media in the Croatian society "it is important for the state to provide a frame, and the frame are European standards," Croatian President Stipe Mesic said when asked during
Wednesday's visit to Vukovar how he assessed the situation in Croatian media in the light of a five-minute protest staged by reporters across the country. "The biggest problem in Croatian media is auto-censorship and I believe reporters themselves must fight for a way out of it. We will provide them with all the support as only free journalism can guarantee a free society," Mesic said. The five-minute protest warning about the jeopardising of the livelihood and trampling on the human and professional dignity of reporters was held on Wednesday on Media Freedom Day in most Croatian towns. The protest was dubbed " "Five Minutes of booming Silence".(hina) lml mm
