Kurelec on Tuesday said Croatia was no longer looked upon as part of
the problem in the region but rather as part of its solution, due to
its active role in the Stability Pact for South-East Europe.
"Croatia does not want to be the country which only receives
assistance, it wants to have an active role in stabilising the
region," Cvjetkovic Kurelec told the Sabor's Committee on Foreign
Affairs. The Committee positively assessed Croatia's activities
within the Stability Pact for South-East Europe.
The Committee also suggested that it be enabled by the new Rule Book
to give its opinion about candidates nominated for ambassadorial
and consular offices.
Speaking about the importance of the Pact, Cvjetkovic Kurelec said
Croatia was ready to take over its share of responsibility for its
success, with a common goal in mind - a permanent peace, progress,
and stability in south-east Europe.
She informed the Committee about the activities the Government was
planning to take within the Pact:
- Late May or June, the Pact's Business Advisory Council will meet
in Zagreb. Croatia supports the idea that a regional conference of
business people from south-east Europe be held at the same time.
- July: a meeting in Dubrovnik of the mayors of the cities through
which the Adriatic-Ionian highway will run. The Pact's special
coordinator Bodo Hombach is expected to attend.
- September 11-13: the Sabor will organise a conference of
parliamentary presidents of all Stability Pact countries on the
role of parliaments in implementing the Stability Pact and
strengthening European and Euro-Atlantic integration processes.
- January 2001: Croatia will become the country co-chairing the
Stability Pact's working table on security issues.
