SARAJEVO, April 10 (Hina) - Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina have the
joint interest in reaching agreement on co-operation in trade as
soon as possible and in accelerating preparations on the conclusion
of the deal, said heads of the Croatian and Bosnian chambers of
commerce, Nadan Vidosevic and Mensur Smajlovic respectively,
during their meeting in Sarajevo on Monday.
The meeting put emphasis on the promotion of the entire economic
cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
Croatia's and Bosnia's economies are complementary and they should
closely cooperate, Vidosevic said.
The Croat representative recalled that suspension of a former trade
agreement between Croatia and Bosnia's Croat-Moslem Federation had
taken a toll on both sides, causing a drastic fall of over 40 percent
in exports of Croatia and Bosnia.
Vidosevic suggested that relations in that field should be arranged
on the grounds of treating the two countries as a single economic
area, reminding that Zagreb and Sarajevo must find answers for
their accession in various international integration structures.
"Our joint interest is to be prepared for the time of opening
Yugoslavia, as this country, no matter it is impoverished, has a
respectable market with 10 million people," Vidosevic said.
Protective measures on which Bosnian insists refusing a totally
liberal trading regime, would be necessary only in a small segment
of the agricultural production and establishment of origins of
imported goods, Vidosevic assessed.
The president of the Bosnian Chamber of Commerce, Mensur Smajlovic,
fully supported the stance that it was necessary to reach a trade
contract between the two countries very soon.
He also urged the signing of an agreement on the protection of
investments and local border traffic and trade in the near future.
Bosnian officials announced that they were intending to organise a
conference on business co-operation between Bosnian and Croatian
companies in the end of May in Sarajevo.
