SPLIT, March 30 (Hina) - German business people are "extremely
interested in taking advantage of the huge investment and
cooperation opportunities" in Croatia, head of the Split branch of
Germany's Office for Economic Cooperation in Central and South-
East Europe, Sonja Bauer, said in Split on Thursday.
Bauer was speaking at a meeting attended by some 40 German business
people and business people from Split-Dalmatia County.
The meeting was held as part of the sixth regular annual visit of
German business people to Croatia, who are on their first visit to
Dalmatia. The gathering included representatives from various
fields - construction, machine-building industry, electrical
engineering, banking, trade and tourism, as well as
representatives from government agencies and chambers of commerce
from both countries.
Trade between Croatia and Germany in 1999 decreased by about 13
percent. German investments in Croatia amounted to DM400 million.
"This is not a big amount. There are huge cooperation
possibilities, but one has to create conditions for them first,"
Bauer said at the introductory plenary meeting, after which
representatives from specific areas held business talks.
Bauer said Germany was aware of Croatia's post-election
orientation to improve the climate for investments and draw closer
to Europe. Croatian laws were harmonised with the European
legislation previously but their implementation departed from the
standard. We do not expect quick changes but we also do not want to
waste to much time, she added.
The chairwoman of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in Split County,
Jadranka Radovanic, told the German delegation the government was
preparing laws which would facilitate foreign investments in
Croatia.
