ZAGREB, March 27 (Hina) - The Croatian National Bank (HNB) on Monday
rejected insinuations that it had kept secret information about
Croatian banks' transactions abroad.
The central bank repudiated allegations published by some media
that it had refused to forward data on such transactions to a former
Finance Minister, Borislav Skegro, which he asked for the work of a
working group called "money hunters" and for the work of the finance
police.
According to a lengthy statement the national bank released today,
Skegro's request for such data was excessive for processing by
computers and vague so that the bank was not capable of responding
to it.
However, "after representatives of the finance police made their
request for data more concrete, the Croatian National Bank, enabled
them to get an insight into a relevant part of the data base," the
statement read.
Concerning Skegro's request, the HNB said preparations for an
answer, owing to a great volume of the data, would take one month.
In addition, the registered information, which Skegro asked for,
about payment operations with foreign countries, and which the Bank
has, is a "source of data for compiling statistics about the balance
of payments. This means that those are statistical data and
generally they are not analysed, neither checked nor do they
present a reliable indicator," read the statement.
