BUDAPEST, March 17 (Hina) - Croatia is concerned over the tension in
Montenegro caused by the regime of Yugoslavia's President Slobodan
Milosevic and maintains that Yugoslav neighbours and Europe should
help the Montenegrin Government, said Croatia's Premier Ivica
Racan in Budapest on Friday.
Racan is taking part in a two-day conference of countries bordering
with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia/Montenegro). The
event has been organised, owing to mounting tension in the region
caused by the increased violence in Kosovo and the pressure which
Belgrade is stepping up on Montenegro.
"We are concerned as forces of a greater Serbia and the institutions
of the Milosevic regime are using the sabre-rattling and causing
tension in Montenegro," Racan told reporters after the first part
of the conference.
I believe, however, that the agreement of all present at the
conference will de-stimulate such possible ambition of the
Milosevic regime, whereas European democratic institutions must
consider it as important to directly help the Montenegrin
Government, he added.
The Croatian Premier said it was the joint interest of Yugoslav
neighbouring countries and the European Union to give impetus to
democratic processes in Serbia in order that democratic relations
be established there.
He stressed that stability in the region south-east of Croatia is of
the vital interest for Croatia so that this country can sustain
development and economic prosperity. For this purpose, Croatia
will contribute to the peaceful settlement of the conflict in
southeastern Europe, Racan added.
Zagreb, however, will not allow that the region determines the
speed of the accomplishment of Croatia's strategic objectives,
namely the accession to the EuroAtlantic structures, he added.
We say yes to the regional cooperation, but no to the regional
destiny, he said adding that Croatia cannot allow to be blocked in
its bids to be speedily admitted to the EU and NATO.
