ZAGREB, March 17 (Hina) - Two former officials in the Croatian
Transport Ministry, apprehended on Thursday on suspicion of having
committed embezzlement, will have to be in custody for one month.
An investigating judge has decided on their one-month-long pre-
trial detention.
A former assistant of the Transport, Communications and Maritime
Affairs Minister, Zvonimir Vedris, and a former co-ordinator for
projects of the construction of airports on Adriatic islands, Davor
Zuvic, have been suspected of committing white-collar crime and
embezzling at least 21.2 million kuna ($2.65 million).
A police investigation established that under Vedris's order, from
1997 to 1999 Transport Ministry paid about 21.2 million kuna to
Zuvic's companies "Archart" and "Codd" for elaboration of studies
on the impact of airport construction on islands, while Zuvic
failed to forward detailed statements on the done job.
On Friday Vedris dismissed all accusations, claiming that he did
not know that Zuvic was the owner of the companies entrusted with
the task of drafting those studies.
Zuvic also denied all charges.
