POLICE ARREST TWO FORMER TRANSPORT MINISTRY OFFICIALS

SPLIT, March 16 (Hina) - A former assistant to the Minister of Transport and Communications, Zvonimir Vedris (aged 48), and a former coordinator at the Transport Ministry in charge of a project for the construction of airports on Croatian islands, Davor Zuvic (44), have been arrested on suspicion of committing economic crimes and inflicting damage of at least 21.2 million kuna on the ministry, Split county police reported on Thursday. Police superintendent Ranko Ostojic said that "connections exist between criminal groups and the former authorities" and warned about "a lack of internal control in the bodies of state administration." Zuvic is suspected of having abused his office and powers and forging official documents, whereas Vedris is under suspicion of forging official documents and aiding in acts regarding the abuse of powers. The case has in the meantime been transferred to the Zagreb County Curt and the suspects will today be taken before the Zagreb County Court investigating judge, who will decide about their detention, Split police officials said.
