ZAGREB, March 16 (Hina) - The number of employed persons in Croatia has continued decreasing in 2000 as well, which is accompanied by a significant increase in the number of the unemployed. In January this year, the total number of
employed persons decreased to below 1.3 million, whereas the number of unemployed persons exceeded 350,000. If to this figure another 957,000 pensioners are added (data for January), the number of pensioners and unemployed persons is now already higher than the number of working people. According to the State Bureau for Statistics, there was a total of 1,296,095 employed persons in Croatia in January, which is 0.6 percent (8,445 persons) less than the month before, and 3.8 percent (or nearly 50,000 persons) less than in June last year. According to the Croatian Employment Bureau, Croatia had 350,707
unemployed persons in late January. The unemployment rate,
calculated as the relation between the number of unemployed persons
and the overall working population (1,646,802), reached 21.3
percent.
