Source says next week crucial for political decision on Croatia

BRUSSELS, June 17 (Hina) - The European Union member-states are very close to reaching a consensus on the conclusion of Croatia's European Union accession negotiations, and EU leaders are expected to make a decision to that effect at their summit meeting next week, said a source from the Hungarian EU presidency in Brussels on Friday.

We are very close to the decision as the European Commission's recommendations are very clear and now we need to reach a consensus. Work is intensive, the source said.

According to the same source, EU foreign ministers are to meet on Tuesday to discuss the matter. After that there will be the EU summit so that the next week will be crucial for a political decision which would facilitate the completion of the negotiations by 30 June when Hungary's presidency over the 27-strong bloc expires.

According to diplomatic sources, EU member are mostly discussing models of monitoring of Croatia and are agreed about the monitoring from the conclusion of the entry talks until Croatia's admission to the EU and not after that.
