Serbian minister Jeremic, U.S. Assistant Secretary Gordon meet in Belgrade

BELGRADE, June 15 (Hina) - Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic and Philip H. Gordon, U.S. Assistant Secretary for Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, on Wednesday held talks in Belgrade on the alleged human organ trafficking in Kosovo, the Serbia-U.S. cooperation and the situation in the region.

The U.S. official arrived in Belgrade from Sarajevo as part of his tour of the region. He is to travel to Pristina and Zagreb, too.

According to a statement from the Serbian foreign ministry, Jeremic informed Gordon about Serbia's proposal for an international investigation into allegations in a report compiled by Swiss politician Dick Marty about the smuggling of human organs in Kosovo.

The Serbian minister expressed hope that a solution would be found for paving the way for an investigation under the mandate of the UN Security Council.

Marty's report was endorsed by the Council of Europe earlier this year. The report implicates officials of the Kosovo Liberation Army in human organ trafficking in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999 and alleges that the victims were Serb detainees.

On Friday, the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) said that it had set up a working group to investigate those allegations.

Serbia insists on an investigation under the UN mandate.
