Brammertz says Serbia has met important obligation with Mladic arrest

BELGRADE, May 31 (Hina) - The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Serge Brammertz, has said that he shares satisfaction with many Serbians with the apprehension of Ratko Mladic, a Bosnian Serb wanted by the ICTY on genocide charges, and that in his forthcoming address to the United Nations Security Council he will speak about many omissions but he will also highlight the Mladic arrest whereby Serbia has met an important international obligation.

Brammertz, who will brief the UN Security Council on 6 June about Serbia's cooperation with the UN tribunal in The Hague over the last six month, gave an interview with the Serbian national broadcaster (RTS) on Tuesday evening.

He welcomed the last week's arrest of Mladic as a result of a well-done job by the police, intelligence services, the Serbian action team in charge of locating Mladic and other Serbian agencies, and said that with the arrest of Mladic, Serbia had met an important international obligation.

Commenting on the treatment of sick indictees, detained in the ICTY's detention centre, Brammertz said that he did not doubt that the best medical care would be provided to Mladic.

The defence team and family of Ratko Mladic, who was on the run for 16 years, tried to appeal his extradition from Belgrade to the Hague-based tribunal for health reasons. The appeal was rejected by the special court in Belgrade earlier on Tuesday, and after that Mladic was transferred from Belgrade to the Netherlands.

Asked about what he was doing when he heard of the news about the Mladic capture, Brammertz said that he had been at a regional conference with prosecutors on the Croatian island of Brijuni and that he had first thought about victims and their families.
