Barroso's special advisor believes Serbia will get status of EU candidate by year's end

BELGRADE, June 7 (Hina) - Dusan Sidjanski, a special advisor to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, was quoted by the Belgrade-based Blic daily on Tuesday as saying that he believed that Serbia would be granted the status of a candidate for European Union membership by the end of this year and that it would be also given a date for launching its accession talks.

Sidjanski said the EU needed the stabilisation in the Balkans and that this interest was more important than any particular interest of individual EU member-states.

"The future of Serbia and the region are at stake. Keeping Serbia aside due to Kosovo, on which the United States is wrongly insisting, means the weakening of the region and strengthening of nationalistic movements. Serbia's progress in European integration processes will not be tied with the recognition of Kosovo but with technical, economic and regional cooperation with Kosovo," Sidjanski said in his interview with the Blic daily.

According to him Brussels is closely watching the reforms Serbia has so far carried out, and the country is now on the right track.
