said on Wednesday that he would request that US assistance for
Croatia be increased to 36 million dollars.
In an interview with the Croatian section of Voice of America,
Voinovich recalled that US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
had recently announced that more funds would be given for projects
within the Stability Pact for South-East Europe.
Commenting on his visit to Croatia last week, Senator Voinovich
said he was cautious in his optimism regarding the current
political situation. Voinovich said he was impressed with his
meetings with Premier Ivica Racan, Parliament President Zlatko
Tomcic and Parliament Vice-President Zdravko Tomac.
Voinovich stressed in the interview that Croatian Serbs were in no
case the only refugees in the region. The resolution of the refugee
problem should be coordinated so that Croats and Bosniaks who were
expelled from their homes in Republika Srpska could also start
returning, he said, pointing to the connection between economic
development and refugee return. The international community must
not fail in providing assistance for economic development, he
said.
