ZAGREB, Feb 9 (Hina) - Voice 2000 - an ad hoc coalition of about 50
non-governmental organisations for monitoring the presidential
election in Croatia - has reached its basic goals, Tin Gazivoda, a
leader of this NGO, said on Wednesday.
Those three objectives were to stimulate as many as possible people
to go to the polls, inform voters of powers of the new President and
follow the campaigning of presidential candidates, Gazivoda told a
news conference.
A turnout of 61.5 percent of voters registered in the presidential
run-off ballot last Monday is high relating to the fact that it was
the third election in six weeks, Gazivoda explained.
Voice 2000 has emphasised the importance of civil society, promoted
moral and political responsibility of politicians and strengthened
relations between citizens and politicians, whereas contenders of
the presidential polls have felt responsibility for each
pronounced word and given pledges, he added.
A professor at Zagreb University's Law School, Josip Kregar,
asserted that civil society had made a grand entrance in Croatia and
raised political culture to a higher level.
He maintained that the recent elections generally enabled younger
people and fresh stands to come to the political scene.
Voice 2000 announced that it would propose to Croatia's President-
elect Stipe Mesic to continue holding talks with ordinary citizens
in the theatre "Kerempuh" in Zagreb.
