Our problems can be settled with Croatia's coming closer to European integration associations and not with closing the door toward Europe and the world. DJAKOVO, Feb 2 (Hina) - Meeting citizens on the central market in
Djakovo, the presidential candidate of the Croatian People's Party
(HNS), Stipe Mesic commenced his tour of this eastern Croatian town
on Wednesday.
After that he attended a meeting of the leadership of the Croatian
Farmers' Association at which he spoke of agricultural and other
current problems in Croatia and their possible solutions.
"We should apply the Austrian model of agriculture and economy in
order to settle problems of Croatian farmers. Our problems can be
settled with Croatia's coming closer to European integration
associations and not with closing the door toward Europe and the
world. It should be made possible for capital to flow in Croatia and
be directed in investments which eventually means creation of more
jobs," Mesic told the session.
After a great number of Djakovo citizens gathered spontaneously in
the fire-fighters' building, Mesic addressed them and reiterated
his stands on Croatia's policy toward neighbouring Bosnia-
Herzegovina.
"Croatia is too small to finance Herzeg-Bosnian structures, and it
has cost us too much so far. People in Herzegovina have nothing with
it, but only a small circle of persons and power-wielders have used
their positions. Due to such attitude toward Bosnia-Herzegovina,
Croatia has impoverished pensioners and workers on one hand, and on
the other hand it is squandering its money like a inebriated
billionaire. We shall pay Herzeg-Bosnia no longer, but we shall
accept Bosnia-Herzegovina as a sovereign state," Mesic said.
He greeted the first move of the new Government led by Premier Ivica
Racan concerning cuts in salaries of state officials.
If elected I shall be the President of initiative and accept powers
which the Sabor confers on me, the HNS candidate for the Croatian
presidential election said.
He finished his visit to Djakovo by an informal meeting with Djakovo
Bishop Marin Srakic.
