ZAGREB, Jan 28 (Hina) - Democratic changes which happened in
Croatia will result in the resolution of problems the international
community has been insisting on and this will speed up the process
of the country's integration into Euro-Atlantic associations,
Croatian Social Liberal Party/Social Democratic Party (HSLS/SDP)
presidential candidate Drazen Budisa said on Friday.
Budisa made this statement following his meeting with U.N. Special
Rapporteur on Human Rights in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and
Yugoslavia, Jiri Dienstbier.
After the meeting, which was held at the HSLS headquarters, Budisa
said he and Diestbier discussed human rights, the consequences of
the parliamentary and presidential elections, refugee return, the
removal of obstacles to refugee return, the change of a number of
legal regulations which are considered discriminatory, media
freedom, and a new law on Croatian Radio Television (HRT).
"We expressed our belief that democratic changes which happened in
Croatia will be followed by a speedy resolution of the existing
problems, and of which both we and the international community are
aware, so that Croatia could accelerate its admission to Euro-
Atlantic associations," Budisa said.
Dienstbier welcomed democratic reforms adding the real
democratisation always started with the first change of the
government as was the case with Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic
and Slovakia.
The new government has been given strong support by the electorate
and it now has the mandate to quickly initiate changes toward a full
democracy, Dienstbier said.
