ZAGREB, Jan 27 (Hina) - The Croatian government at its 257th session
on Thursday adopted a report on government work under Premier
Zlatko Matesa from early November 1995 to the present.
Summing up the work of the government he headed, Matesa said the
strategy of the government which came into office after "Flash" and
"Storm", military-police operations through which Croatia
liberated Serb-occupied parts of its territory, was the
maintenance of political and economic stability, and the
completion of the peaceful reintegration of the Danube River Region
in eastern Croatia with the rest of the country.
Based on that strategy, the government's goals were to ensure
orderly state finances and stable macro-economic indicators,
namely a low inflation and a stable currency rate. The government in
great part succeeded in resolving the issues of reconstruction and
the return of displaced persons, ensuring the rights of Homeland
War veterans and victims, and increasing the standard of living.
The government also worked out reforms for the juridical system,
legislation, and the pension system, as well as initiating a reform
of the health system, and undertaking major work on the
infrastructure and the rehabilitation of the economy.
"We haven't succeeded in everything, but that's part of life," said
outgoing Premier Matesa.
During today's three-hour session, all ministries submitted
reports on their work under Matesa. The new ministers will be
acquainted with the reports tomorrow.
All ministers gave written statements on their assets upon coming
into and stepping out of office. The statements will be made public
in the coming days through the government's Media and Public
Relations Office, said Matesa.
Closing today's final session, the outgoing prime minister thanked
all government members and departments on their cooperation.
