of the presidential election, held on Monday. According to the results, announced after midnight, Mesic was on the top with 42 percent of the vote, and he was followed by Drazen Budisa, the candidate of the SDP/HSLS coalition. These two contestants will run in the second round of the presidential election on February 7. with first unofficial preliminary results of the presidential
election, held on Monday.
According to the results, announced after midnight, Mesic was on
the top with 42 percent of the vote, and he was followed by Drazen
Budisa, the candidate of the SDP/HSLS coalition. These two
contestants will run in the second round of the presidential
election on February 7.
Mesic described his campaign in the run-up to the first round of the

He said that in the second round of the election he expected to gain
votes of Croatian Homeland War soldiers, and those who had been
creating Croatia from the beginning, adding that votes gained by
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) candidate Mate Granic, who was
third according to gained votes, would be divided.
Citizens recognised my messages and opposing the policy of the
former Government, Mesic said.
He stressed that in the upcoming period Croatia must approach
European integration, and stop the isolation. Croatia's place is in
Europe, and we must implement all European standards, Mesic said.
When asked how would the competition between him and Budisa
influence relations within the Six, Mesic said he did not expect
significant changes, but cooperation which was agreed on before the
recently held parliamentary elections.
Mesic stressed that his campaign was financed by his friends and
people who believed in his policy.
He said that in the continuation of the campaign ahead of the second
round of the ballot he would put an emphasis on the European option
of Croatia which would make possible for his country to enter the
European Union and NATO.
