VARAZDIN, Jan 11 (Hina) - "Behind me are 30 years of fighting for
Croatia and I have not bowed to pressure," the presidential
candidate for the Social Democratic Party/Croatian Social Liberal
Party (SDP/HSLS) coalition, Drazen Budisa, told a pre-electoral
rally in Varazdin on Tuesday.
"We have realised our dream of independent and free Croatia, and
today we must establish a state in which all will be equal before the
law, and in which the young will have prospects. Croatia needs a new
political speech and a policy of new direction," said Budisa.
"If you support me at presidential elections, in four months I will
do to integrate Croatia with international institutions more than
the HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) did in the past decade," Budisa
said.
Promising he would renounce any privileges, the candidate of the
coalition which won recent parliamentary elections said he would
cut the salaries of parliament's representatives, officials, and
president, that he would not use the official residence of the
President of the Republic nor the residential premises on the
Brijuni Isles, and that he would continue residing in his current
flat.
"Croatia must be stripped of every luxury, because to realise our
programme social peace is imperative. Besides, when I am elected
president, I will leave the HSLS, because the president must be the
president of all citizens, and I intend to establish the
integrative role by introducing into the presidential council
representatives of all parliamentary parties," said Budisa.
He called on the rally to vote for him at the January 24 elections
because, he added, it was the only way to bring to an end the changes
begun with the January 3 parliamentary elections.
