OSIJEK, Dec 19 (Hina) - Croatian Assistant Justice Minister Radovan
Majski and the head of the Penalty Implementation Administration,
Neven Putar, visited the Osijek County penitentiary on Wednesday
where they spoke with nine Serb detainees indicted of war crimes.
They have been refusing prison food for seven days.
Putar told reporters this was not a hunger strike, since they were
refusing to eat prison food, but they could still buy food in the
canteen. He added the nine were under constant medical supervision,
and one had stopped refusing food.
The detainees said they had no objections to the prison's
management and the attitude of the personnel toward them. Their
protest was an expression of dissatisfaction with the system, Putar
said.
He did not want to discuss other issues, but added that the trial was
scheduled for December 12, because of "discrimination in the court
proceedings and a number of irregularities and injustice brought
upon them in the proceedings".
The Serb detainees who are refusing to eat prison food wrote an open
letter to the public last week, requesting, among other things, for
them to be tried in The Hague "because they have no confidence in the
Croatian justice system".
