Congress, Ante Jelavic, has requested the president of the
country's Helsinki Committee on Human Rights, Srdjan Dizdarevic,
to work towards the protection of the human and civic rights of the
Bosnian Croat people.
In a letter issued on Tuesday on the occasion of International Human
Rights Day, Jelavic states the individual and collective political
and civic rights of Bosnia's Croats are being drastically violated,
as are their rights stemming from their status as a constituent
Bosnian people.
According to Jelavic, the violations culminated in the changes to
provisional electoral rules and regulations, the abuse of the civic
majority principle, the withdrawal of election mandates without
the right to replacement, and the suppression of the political
will.
Jelavic also pointed to what he called crude violations of the human
rights of several hundred Bosnian Croat cultural, scientific,
police, military and political figures.
In March the international community's High Representative in
Bosnia, Wolfgang Petritsch, launched an investigation into Jelavic
and his closest associates on charges of their undermining Bosnia's
constitutional order. Jelavic was dismissed from all political
posts.
