OPATIJA, Nov 18 (Hina) - Partnership between state institutions, non-governmental organisations, reporters and the public, is necessary precondition for fighting corruption, participants of a two-day seminar on the role of media in
the fight against corruption in Opatija, concluded on Sunday. The organisers of the seminar which ended on Sunday were Transparency International Croatia (TI) and the Croatian Law Centre. Participants were lawyers and reporters dealing with corruption. They concluded that the government must act responsibly and transparently, securing the availability of timely information about public affairs because everything that is not a state secret should be made public. Reporters and the TI will advocate the passing of a law on the rights to information which will guarantee availability of information about the public affairs of citizens and the media. Reporters and the TI will advocate the passing of a law on the rights
to information which will guarantee availability of information
about the public affairs of citizens and the media.
It is the obligation of politicians and public persona in the race
for political positions to publicly declare their views on the
problem of corruption and to set an example by making public
information about their property, incomes and possible conflicts
of interests, thus contributing to the efficiency of political
institutions.
The participants warned about the danger of commercialisation of
the media affecting the professional and ethic conduct of
reporters.
