OPATIJA, Dec 6 (Hina) - The enforcement of the Law on the Organised
Crime and Corruption Prevention Office (USKOK) is one of the
principal topics of the 14th conference of the Croatian Association
for Criminology, which started in the northern Adriatic tourist
resort of Opatija on Thursday.
The three-day event was opened by parliamentary speaker Zlatko
Tomcic, who said that parliament, by amending and adopting a series
of new laws, had attempted to provide conditions for a more
efficient judiciary.
Tomcic said the participants in the conference, judges, lawyers,
state prosecutors, and legal experts, must join in the adjustment
of Croatia's legislation to European Union standards.
Chief state prosecutor Radovan Ortynski maintains the Opatija
conference is a good opportunity to analyse the bad aspects of the
USKOK law, the final version of which differs considerably from the
original one, proposed by the State Prosecutor's Office.
Combating global terrorism and organised crimes calls for
appropriate mechanisms, including good legal provisions, said
Ortynski.
Ortynski and the head of the Interior Ministry's crime police
department, Dragutin Cestar, emphasised the importance of
cooperation among the police, the State Prosecutor's Office, and
all competent state institutions in the prevention of organised
crime.
Cestar maintains the passing of police and USKOK laws has provided
conditions for more effective crime prevention.
