State-level Council active in preparations for elections of ethnic minority councils

ZAGREB, June 9 (Hina) - The Croatian National Minorities' Council has ensured funds for a campaign ahead of the 10 July election of councils and representatives of ethnic minorities in Croatia, the state-level council's vice president Nikola Mak said on Thursday.

Funds have been provided to nongovernmental organisations "GONG" and "Stina" for the promotion of elections and candidates through local broadcasters, Mak said before today's meeting of the Council.

The information campaign is directed at improving a turnout, which was very low at the last two elections for ethnic minority councils and representatives in the units of self-government, he said calling on the heads of municipalities and mayors to pay more attention to this matter.

Ethnic Serb representative Ratko Gajica also pointed out the problem of a lack of interest in units of local authorities in those elections.

Zorislav Ham of the State Election Commission said that the deadline for the submission of applications had expired.

Ethnic Italian representative Furio Radin said that those elections would lack seriousness as long as they were not tied to other elections such as local and parliamentary elections.
