Hailing this project, member of the Croatian Parliament, Denes Soja, today voiced hope that the newly-opened home would give an additional impetus to the local Hungarian community for its activities in culture and other fields.
The project, which is being funded by the Croatian government and the umbrella organisation of the Hungarian associations in Croatia, is aimed at refurbishing facilities used by ethnic Hungarian associations. It was launched in 2007 and since then Hungarian Homes have been inaugurated in Beli Manastir, Novi Bezdan, Lug, Grubisno Polje, Hrastin, Zmajevac, Osijek, Cakovci, Darda and Stari Jankovci.
Stari Jankovci, located in Vukovar-Srijem County, has 200 villagers of Hungarian descent, who make up some 5 percent of the municipality's population. There are about 2,100 ethnic Hungarians in Vukovar County.
