PERPETRATORS OF CRIMES HAVE NOT BEEN MADE RESPONSIBLE - SVILANOVIC

BELGRADE, Nov 20 (Hina) - The main obstacle to the normalisation of relations between Yugoslavia and Croatia is the fact that "those who organised or carried out the (war) crimes have not been made responsible," Yugoslav Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic told Tuesday's issue of Belgrade's daily Blic. "Svilanovic said "crimes were committed in Vukovar of which politicians who at least inadvertently motivated them, must be ashamed and repent, and we who came later, must deeply regret". Ahead of his visit to Croatia, the Yugoslav foreign minister said he would have nothing against meeting the mayor of Vukovar on his way to Zagreb, adding that the eastern Croatian town was a "Symbol of suffering and destruction". Today Vukovar is a part of Croatia's new identity "as each of us Serbs carries with us Kosovo or Jasenovac," Svilanovic said. He added that he would also like to meet Vukovar's mayor because of the fact that "quite a large Serb community" lived in the town's suburbs. Svilanovic called on the two countries' commissions for missing persons to continue their cooperation because the families of missing people on both sides have the right to know the whereabouts of their loved ones.
