President Stjepan Mesic said Thursday at the beginning of a one-day
conference on the euro and its impact on the Croatian economy.
The introducing of the euro is an important part of European
association and it is a transparent confirmation that European
countries can cooperate with one another, Mesic said.
He added the European Union has to experience a transition and
ensure that non members join as soon as possible. Such united Europe
excludes any territorial war, Mesic stressed.
German Ambassador to Croatia, Gebhardt Weiss, stressed the
political dimension must not be forgotten during discussions on all
the economic effects of the euro. Weiss said that according to
Germany, this is an exceptional event which has been complemented
by an impending decision on the active involvement of German
defence forces in the defence of world peace. He added the German
mark is a category on its own and an important part of the German
identity. Eastern Germans longed for it ten years ago, and now, ten
years after West Germany and East Germany united, a united Europe is
happening, he said.
The conference, organised by the Konrad Adenauer foundation and the
business-financial weekly "Privredni Vjesnik", tackled the macro-
and micro-economic aspects the introduction of the euro will have
on the Croatian market.
