ZAGREB, Nov 5 (Hina) - A dispute with Italy over a decision of the Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi to confer a gold medal for war merits on the 1943 Italian government of Croatia's Zadar due to the suffering of the town during
World War II shellings by the Allies and a halt in the completion of a cooperation and partnership agreement will be taken off the agenda most probably this week, Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan told a news conference Monday. "Croatia does not want to deepen the dispute or conflict with neighbouring Italy. Both countries are interested in cooperation and I believe that the issues which have caused disagreements will be taken off the agenda this week," the Prime Minister stressed. ZAGREB, Nov 5 (Hina) - A dispute with Italy over a decision of the
Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi to confer a gold medal for
war merits on the 1943 Italian government of Croatia's Zadar due to
the suffering of the town during World War II shellings by the
Allies and a halt in the completion of a cooperation and partnership
agreement will be taken off the agenda most probably this week,
Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan told a news conference Monday.
"Croatia does not want to deepen the dispute or conflict with
neighbouring Italy. Both countries are interested in cooperation
and I believe that the issues which have caused disagreements will
be taken off the agenda this week," the Prime Minister stressed.
He reminded that the Osimo agreements apply to Croatia as a
successor country to the former Yugoslavia.
The damage which was caused to the Esuli and our people during the
Italian occupation has been settled and historically solved. There
are no reasons why the remaining open issues should not be solved,
too, Racan stressed.
Croatian Foreign Minister Tonino Picula said a group of Italian and
Croatian experts in Rome this week would continue to work on the
removal of the remaining disagreements regarding the cooperation
and partnership agreement, which could then be signed.
We believe that the standstill in the signing of the agreement with
Rome was unnecessary. We had the right to react to the unacceptable
announcement from the Office of the Italian President (regarding
the medal to the 1943 Italian government of Zadar). We hope Italy
will also show good will, the Croatian Foreign Minister said.
