PARLIAMENT REJECTS PROPOSAL TO CALL REFERENDUM ON WAR VETERANS

ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Friday turned down a proposal calling for a referendum that was to decide if Homeland War veterans should be granted equal treatment before courts as enjoyed by all defence and anti-fascist armies after World War Two. The calling of the referendum was initiated by the national headquarters for the protection of Homeland War values. To that end, more than 400,000 Croatian constituents signed a petition earlier this year. A decision on the calling of the referendum was formally moved by the parliamentary bench of the strongest opposition party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). Parliament tackled the decision at an emergency session in July, but there was no voting as HDZ bench president Vladimir Seks failed to wrap up his address by midnight, when the session was to end as stipulated by the Constitution, due to what he earlier said were "
