SARAJEVO, Oct 24 (Hina) - Bosnian Serb Dragan Stankovic was sentenced on Wednesday to ten years in prison for war crimes committed in the eastern Bosnian town of Foca in 1992. Stankovic stood trial for violations of humanitarian law
and the laws and customs of war before the Sarajevo Cantonal Court.Charges for participating in the killing of Bosniak civilians and prisoners of war were dropped during the trial. The prosecution proved, however, that Stankovic is directly responsible for the rape of Bosniak (Muslim) women, who were detained by Serb paramilitary units in Foca. Explaining the verdict, the chairman of the panel of judges, Davorin Jukic, said it was beyond any doubt that Stankovic was responsible for the persecution and torture of civilians, which was a fundamental part of the Bosnian Serb policy of ethnic cleansing in eastern Bosnia.(hina) it
