SARAJEVO, Oct 19 (Hina) - Bosnia-Herzegovina's authorities are in
permanent contact with the embassies of the United States and Great
Britain in Sarajevo, and are doing all they can to ensure conditions
for their re-opening as soon as possible.
A spokesman for Bosnia's Foreign Ministry, Amer Kapetanovic, on
Friday said the closing of the two embassies was exclusively a
matter of intelligence assessments of the US and British
governments.
Kapetanovic said those were "preventive measures" which had
already been taken in many other countries.
"It is about an assessment that some acts of revenge for military
operations against Afghanistan could ensue," Kapetanovic said.
He declined to comment on the arrest of two men in Sarajevo on 17
October.
According to media speculation, the federal police apprehended two
Algerians, one of whom had also Bosnian citizenship. The two are
believed to have phoned the US Embassy making threats, after which
the embassy was closed.
The foreign ministry does not possess information about the reason
for the arrest of the two men, while the Croat-Muslim interior
ministry has neither confirmed nor refuted the media reports.
Kapetanovic added that the closing of the embassies did not mean the
cessation of diplomatic activities. No foreign diplomat has so far
left the country, the spokesman added.
