The results, obtained during research conducted by three American
professors Clifford Zinnes, Yair Eilat and Jeffrey Sachs, were
published by a journal, "The Economics of Transition", and cited by
the latest issue of the Economic Monitoring of the Croatian
Employers' Association (HUP).
According to the research of these professors from Harvard
University, the best competitiveness was shown by Hungary.
It was followed by the Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, Slovenia
and Croatia.
Macedonia was the tenth, whereas Turkmenistan was at the bottom of
the list.
The economic experts from Harvard University drew up the list on the
basis of data from the 1997-98 period.
They took into consideration six areas of indicators: good
government, openness, infrastructure, the finance sector, labour
market and the sixth group including political, legal, regulatory
and legislative factors, plus the seventh area, i.e. technology.
The researchers used the so-called firm data (statistical figures)
and 'soft' data from opinion polls.
