RACAN COMMENTS ON CONTROVERSIAL MOVIE, RECENTLY SHOWN BY 'HT'

ZAGREB, Oct 10 (Hina) - During the question time at the parliament, Croatian Premier Ivica Racan on Wednesday said he personally was not happy to see confrontations caused by a documentary "Oluja Nad Krajinom (Storm Over Krajina)", but he declined to join those who were leading heated debates over this film, recently broadcast at the Croatian Television (HT). In this context PM stressed that a democratic Croatia must be capable of dealing with such challenges. Unfortunately, the state takes part, like in this or other cases, in the financing of various institutions and groups which then return a favour by inciting hatred and intolerance. The problem crops up in the confrontation of radical stands, Premier said adding that the Croatian policy was exposed to attacks from both sides. During the question time, a representative of the Croatian Christian Democratic Union (HKDU), Anto Kovacevic, asked which interest the government had when it decided to help finance the said movie, which according to Kovacevic, "slanders the Homeland War and promotes the Serb terrorism." The movie, shown by the Croatian Television on 1 October, stirred up polemics and the division in the Croatian public. It is about crimes which Croatian army troops allegedly committed over the local Serb population, in the wake of the liberating operation "Storm" in August 1995. (hina) ms
