ZAGREB, Oct 7 (Hina) - A new political party called "True Croatian
Revival (HIP)" was constituted at its founding session in Zagreb on
Saturday night.
The new party, at whose helm is Miroslav Tudjman, a son of the first
Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, was established on the grounds
of an association called "The Association for Croatian Identity and
Prosperity (HIP)" that gathered some former leading officials of
the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
Miroslav Tudjman was unanimously elected as the party's president
by 200 deputies that gathered at yesterday's constituent
assembly.
His deputies are Admiral Davor Domazet-Loso and Nenad Ivankovic.
The electoral convention of the party will be held in the coming six
months when the leadership of the party with four-year-long term of
office should be chosen.
Miroslav Tudjman on Sunday said the goals of the newly-established
political party were to reassert basic national values and create a
modern and economically successful Croatian state.
He said at a news conference that this party would like to be the
alternative to the current authorities, which he and his aides
regard as incompetent and irresponsible.
Tudjman announced he would work on the formation of an opposition
coalition.
According to his estimates, his party could win between 10 and 15
percent of the vote at the next election and thus tilt the balance in
favour of the current opposition.
Tudzman added that the Association for Croatian Identity and
Prosperity (HIP) would continue to be active as a non-party society
and members of other political parties could join it as well.
Commenting on the relations between his HIP party and the Croatian
Democratic Union (HDZ), Tudjman said it was not possible now to be a
member of the these two parties at the same time. He explained that
the basic difference between the HIP and the HDZ (from which some
leading HIP members came) lay in the HIP insistence on the creation
of a modern democratic country where people could have a good living
standard.
