ZAGREB, Sept 28 (Hina) - One of two Egyptians arrested by the
Bosnian federation's police in July has been identified as the
person who planted a car-bomb in the Croatian seaport of Rijeka, the
federal interior minister said, adding the man would not be handed
over to Croatia but Egypt.
"We established that person is involved in the planting of the car-
bomb in Rijeka, but due to other crimes that Egypt wants him for, he
will be extradited to that country," Minister Muhamed Besic told
reporters in Sarajevo without saying the man's name.
From what he said it transpires the man is Hassan Al Sharif Mahmud
Saad, whom Croatian police have been searching for years in
connection with the Rijeka attempted assassination. He was
arrested in Bosnia last July 12 under the name Abdulah Essindar on
suspicion of using false identification and concealing his real
identity. He was arrested with another Egyptian citizen who will
also be extradited based on a request from the authorities in Cairo.
Both will be handed over in the next two-three days.
Last week, Minister Besic announced Saad might be extradited to
Croatia. Asked why it did not happen, he said: "I made that
statement on purpose to provoke my Croatian colleague a little.
Croatia did not react properly when we requested the extradition of
a person wanted for involvement in the Jozo Leutar murder." Besic
referred to the arrest and release of Mario Milicevic last May.
Milicevic is one of several indictees for participation in the
assassination of Leutar, a former deputy interior minister of
Bosnia's Croat-Muslim federation. He was detained in a police
station near the southern Croatian seaport of Cavtat after applying
for his wife's Croatian citizenship. He was released following an
investigation, despite a warrant issued by the Bosnian
federation's interior ministry. The extradition request was turned
down as he is a Croatian citizen.
