SKOPJE, Sept 16 (Hina) - According to Macedonia's authorities,
there are still armed Albanian extremists who are not respecting a
cease-fire in the area of Tetovo. A spokesman for the Macedonian
army, Lieutenant Blagoja Markovski, said on Sunday that
terrorists, situated in the villages of Celopek, Sidol, Sipkovica
and Tetovo itself, had opened fire overnight.
During a regular news briefing at the NATO base in Skopje, a
spokesman for the Alliance units in Macedonia, Barry Johnson, said
a part of the weapons collected during the operation 'Harvest
Essential' had been destroyed at the training grounds of Krivolak.
Another part of the arms collected from ethnic Albanian rebels will
be transported to Greece and subsequently destroyed as well, he
said adding that the NATO-led operation would go on in the coming
days.
Macedonia's parliament, that is to convene tomorrow, should
discuss a motion proposed by the recently-found political party
'New Democracy' on holding a referendum pertaining to the
Constitution's changes.
So far, this initiative has been supported by all minor parties and
a part of VMRO-DPMNE MPs, whereas the Social-Democratic Alliance
and ethnic Albanian parties are against it.
One of Albanian political leaders, Arben Xaferi, has announced that
another referendum could be expected in the Albanian community as
their counter-measure.
On Wednesday, 19 September, the parliament will begin discussing
constitutional amendments, drawn up in accordance to a framework
agreement concluded during the negotiations in Ohrid this summer. A
heated discussion is expected.
During his recent tour to Skopje, NATO Secretary-General George
Robertson has stressed that he opposes any change which is not
agreed during the Ohrid talks.
