SKOPJE, Aug 12 (Hina) - Macedonia's Defence Ministry reported late
last night that the clashes near the village of Radusa had ceased at
about 09.00 pm Saturday.
The severest fighting escalated on Saturday afternoon when
Macedonian forces used all available means including helicopters
and aircraft, and inflicted serious losses to ethnic Albanian armed
groups.
During the fighting, Albanian rebels opened fire from mortars,
situated in the areas of Goranci, Krivenik and Globocica, Kosovo,
the defence ministry added.
According to the same source, one Macedonian policeman sustained
serious injuries and is in critical condition, whereas another
eight members of Macedonian forces were slightly hurt.
During the ethnic Albanian guerrillas' attack on Tetovo last night,
two civilians and four police officers were wounded and several
houses hit, the Macedonian ministry said.
In relation to Saturday's mortar attacks launched from Kosovo and
movements of members of the Kosovo protection corps from that area
into Macedonia, Macedonia's President Boris Trajkovski forwarded a
letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, NATO Secretary General
George Robertson and US Secretary of State, Collin Powell, asking
for the discontinuation of assistance which the said corps is
offering to the army of Macedonian Albanians, called 'ONA'.
The Macedonian head of state also asks relevant factors to find and
annul camps for the training of Macedonian Albanian guerrillas as
well as their arms dumps and thus prevent direct aggression against
his country.
Trajkovski insists that NATO-led peace keepers in Kosovo (KFOR) do
their job and prevent illegal movements from Kosovo into
Macedonia.
