SKOPJE, Aug 9 (Hina) - The Macedonian army's chief-of-staff, Gen.
Pande Petrovski, was relieved of duty on Thursday over inadequate
protection of a military convoy in which ten soldiers were killed in
an Albanian guerrilla ambush on the Skopje-Tetovo road yesterday.
President Boris Trajkovski appointed the former deputy chief-of-
staff, Lt. Gen. Metodi Stamboliski, acting military chief-of-
staff.
Macedonia today proclaimed national mourning day over the death of
the aforementioned soldiers. The situation in the Tetovo area
following this, to date gravest incident since a recent truce, has
escalated badly.
Throughout last night Albanian guerrillas violated a cease-fire by
attacking Macedonian forces which responded with all available
means, including aircraft, the spokesman for the military general
staff, Lt. Col. Blagoje Markovski, said.
One Macedonian policeman was killed and three were wounded in the
clashes. An Albanian civilian sustained serious injuries.
The guerrillas continued plundering Macedonian-owned houses in the
predominantly Albanian town of Tetovo, expelling the tenants. In
the morning, Albanian extremists attacked Macedonian positions on
Popova Sapka, as well as in the Kumanovo crisis area, Markovski
added.
Albania's acting ambassador was summoned to the Macedonian Foreign
Ministry today and handed a protest note over the participation of
Albanian citizens in terrorism in Macedonia.
The note says the evidence gathered by competent Macedonian bodies
indicates three Albanian citizens took part in terrorist
activities in Macedonia's north-west.
